In late July, the Dodgers visited Fenway Park. This time, it’s a special moment for Walker Buehler because he got the ring of the 2024 World Series Champion. He recorded the final out of the 2024 World Series.
Walker Buehler looked excited to get the ring. While watching his interview, I began to think about his career with the Dodgers, in particular, in the World Series. In the Fall Classic, he seems to pitch well in the Dodgers uniform.
To clarify my thoughts, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
Looking at the earned run average, Walker Buehler’s ERA is only 0.47 in the World Series. He made 3 starts and 1 relief appearance in the Fall Classic, giving up only 1 run over 19 innings. Moreover, Larry Sherry was the 1959 World Series MVP. In that Fall Classic, he made 4 relief appearances, allowing only 1 run over 12.2 innings. Also, Claude Osteen made 3 starts for the Dodgers in the World Series, throwing 21 innings with an ERA below 1. Furthermore, Sherry Smith made 3 starts for the Dodgers in the World Series, giving up only 4 runs (3 earned) in 30.1 innings. And let’s take a look at a legend. Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax is a 2-time World Series MVP. In his great career, he threw 57 innings in the World Series and gave up only 10 runs (6 earned).
Well, Julio Urias had a K/9 rate over 13 in the Fall Classic. However, due to some issues, he hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2023. Nonetheless, Rich Hill still pitches. Previously, he threw 15 innings for the Dodgers in the World Series, striking out 19 batters. Also, Walker Buehler’s K/9 rate is over 11 in the WS. Charlie Hough’s K/9 rate was over 10 in the World Series as well. He tossed 12.1 innings for the Dodgers in the Fall Classic.
Thirdly, let’s look at which pitchers didn’t give up free passes easily. Walker Buhler only gave up 3 walks in the World Series and his BB/9 was below 1.50 in the World Series. Larry Sherry only allowed 2 free passes over 12.2 innings in the 1959 World Series. His BB/9 was 1.42. Hugh Casey tossed 15.2 innings for the Dodgers in the World Series and his BB/9 was 1.72. Koufax had a 1.74 BB/9 in the World Series.
Finally, let’s look at WHIP. Walker Buehler’s WHIP was only 0.53 in the World Series. Julio Urias’ WHIP was 0.70 in the Fall Classic. Alex Wood tossed 14 innings for the Dodgers in the World Series with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP. Furthermore, Hershiser and Sherry each owned a WHIP below 0.80 when they pitched for the Dodgers in the Fall Classic.
Looking at Walker Buehler’s performance in the World Series, he tossed 19 innings with a 0.47 ERA and a 0.53 WHIP. With a high K/9 rate and a low BB/9 rate, the Dodgers fans will surely remember his outstanding performance in the World Series and his contribution to the team. In particular, the final out of the 2024 World Series.
