Just a few days ago, we reviewed some hitters’ performances after being traded. Now, let’s shift our focus to the mound. Before the trade deadline, several pitchers were traded. And how have they pitched in a uniform?
Firstly, Mason Miller and JP Sears were sent from the A’s to the Padres. Miller was the closer of the A’s. This season, he earned 20 saves for the A’s, posting a 3.76 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over 38.1 innings. JP Sears made 22 starts for the A’s in 2025, posting a 4.95 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 111 innings. After they joined the Padres, Mason Miller already made 10 relief appearances, posting a 1.80 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP with 1 save over 10 innings. Meanwhile, Sears made 3 starts for the Padres, giving up 10 runs (9 earned) in 14.2 innings.
Before the trade deadline, several teams showed strong interest in Jhoan Duran. Eventually, he was sent to the Phillies. Duran earned 16 saves for the Twins in 2025, posting a 2.01 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. In the Phillies uniform, Duran already earned 7 saves in 10 relief appearances. He owns a 2.35 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP over 7.2 innings.
Moreover, the Yankees acquired David Bednar from the Pirates. Bednar made 42 relief appearances for the Pirates this year. He collected 17 saves and owned a 2.37 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 38 innings. In the pinstripes, Bednar has made 10 relief appearances, posting a 3.18 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP with 3 saves.
In addition, Ryan Helsley was the closer of the Cardinals and he was traded to the Mets. Helsley earned 21 saves in the Cardinals uniform with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. However, he now has an ERA over 10 after making 11 relief appearances for the Mets.
Finally, several teams decided to enhance their rotations. The Rangers acquired Merrill Kelly from the D-backs and the Blue Jays got Shane Bieber from the Guardians. The Red Sox acquired Dustin May from the Dodgers. Well, in 2025, Shane Bieber didn’t pitch any games for the Guardians before the trade deadline. Dustin May tossed 104 innings for the Dodgers, posting a 4.85 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Merrill Kelly made 22 starts for the D-backs. He owned a 3.22 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP over 128.2 innings. After being traded, Kelly already made 5 starts for the Rangers, posting a 3.10 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 29 innings. Dustin May made 4 starts for the Red Sox thus far. In the Red Sox uniform, May now owns a 4.50 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP in 20 innings. Shane Bieber just returned to the mound, making his first start in 2025. He went 6 innings, allowing only 1 run.
As we can see, Mason Miller looks fine after joining the Padres bullpen. Jhoan Duran now is a very important pitcher in the Phillies bullpen and he has done a good job most of the time. And Bednar’s performance is quite consistent. In the final month of the 2025 season, we can keep watching if they can continue to help their teams secure wins. At the same time, some starters, in particular, Shane Bieber, who used to win the AL Cy Young award, will one of them make a huge impact in September?
