Dominant against the Phillies?

In game 3 of the NLDS, Clayton Kershaw took the mound in the top of the 7th inning. Eventually, he tossed 2 innings in NLDS game 3, giving up 5 runs (4 earned). He allowed 2 home runs this game. Well, his performance was shaky.

It was his final time against the Phillies in the postseason. Early in his career, he faced the Phillies in the NLCS in 2008 and 2009. Nonetheless, back then, his performance wasn’t good against the Phillies, either. In 2008, he threw 2 innings, giving up 1 run. In 2009, he tossed 6.2 innings, allowing 7 runs (all earned). Kershaw’s career is phenomenal. Nevertheless, against the Phillies in the postseason, his performance hasn’t been good. After watching Kershaw’s performance against the Phillies, I was just thinking about another thing. Which pitchers did pitch well against the Phillies in the postseason? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the statcast website.

Cristian Javier didn’t pitch much over the last 2 seasons. However, he’s an important player to help the Astros win the 2022 World Series. In game 4 of the 2022 World Series, Cristian Javier was the starter for the Astros. He tossed 6 innings without allowing any hits. He was dominant.

Back in 2010, Matt Cain made the starting pitcher in the NLCS game 3. He went 7 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits. His great performance helped the Giants win the NLCS and advance to the World Series.

In addition, Ryan Pressly made 5 relief appearances in the 2022 World Series. He collected 2 saves. In 5.2 innings, he only gave up 2 hits. He had a .100 BAA in the 2022 WS.

Well, the Braves lost to the Phillies in the 2022 NLDS. However, Kyle Wright did pitch well in NLDS game 2. He went 6 scoreless innings and allowed only 2 hits while striking out 6 batters. The Phillies batters only hit .100 against him. Furthermore, also in 2022, the Phillies and the Cardinals played in the Wild Card Series. The Phillies defeated the Cardinals. Nonetheless, Jose Quintana made the start in the first game, allowing only 2 hits in 5.2 innings. Quintana didn’t let the Phillies score any runs and had a .111 BAA.

Finally, Framber Valdez made 2 starts against the Phillies in the 2022 World Series. He threw 12.1 innings, giving up 6 hits with 2 runs (all earned). His performance was good and he earned 2 important wins to help the Astros win the WS title. The Phillies only hit .150 against him. And Shohei Ohtani made his playoff pitching debut. It was in game 1 of the NLDS, he went 6 innings, allowing 3 hits with 3 runs (all earned).

Certainly, Kershaw’s performance wasn’t great against the Phillies in the postseason. Nonetheless, as we can see, Javier, Pressly and Valdez were key pitchers to help the Astros win the 2022 World Series because they pitched very well against the Phillies. Moreover, Matt Cain’s good performance against the Phillies in 2010 was an important one for the Giants to move forward.
