9th round, nice?

Around 2 or 3 weeks ago, I received some lucky bags that I ordered. After opening the first pack, I found a Thomas Pannone autograph card. It’s from the 2019 Topps Chrome.

Pannone was selected by the Cleveland Indians (Guardians) in the 9th round of the 2013 draft. He was traded to the Blue Jays in 2017 and in 2018 he made it into the big leagues. The last time he played in the majors was in 2023. So far in his career, he made 13 starts and 37 relief appearances, posting a 5.46 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP over 118.2 innings. While looking at the autograph card, I’m just thinking about the 9th rounders in the 2013 draft. Are there any other players who made it into the big leagues as well?

To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.

In total, there are actually 9 players, who made it into the big leagues, from the 9th round of the 2013 draft. Besides Thomas Pannone, let’s take a look at other 8 players and how they have done in the majors.

Pat Valaika was selected by the Rockies and made his MLB debut in 2016. The last time he played in the majors was in 2021. In his career, he slashed .211/.264/.378 with 30 home runs and 92 RBI over 374 games. At the same time, the Twins chose Mitch Garver and Garver made his MLB debut in 2017. So far in his career, he hits .233/.326/.440 with 106 home runs and 309 RBI. He played 87 games for the Mariners in 2025 but he’s now a free agent.

In the meantime, Kyle Martin was selected by the Red Sox. He made it into the big leagues in 2017 and threw 2.1 innings. Moreover, the Blue Jays chose Chad Girodo. Girodo pitched in the majors in 2016, posting a 4.35 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP over 10.1 innings.

In addition, the Padres selected Adam Cimber. Cimber made his MLB debut in 2018. The last time he pitched in the majors was in 2024. In his career, he made 351 relief appearances, posting a 3.75 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 323.2 innings. Furthermore, the Pirates selected Chad Kuhl. Kuhl made his MLB debut in 2016 and the last time he pitched in the majors was in 2024. In his career, he made 117 starts and 57 relief appearances. He owned a 4.98 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP over 668.1 innings.

Finally, the Rays chose Austin Pruitt and the Giants selected D.J. Snelten. They are both pitchers. Pruitt made his MLB debut in 2017 and the last time he pitched in the majors was in 2024. He threw 315 innings in his career, posting a 4.54 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. D.J. Snelten tossed 4.1 innings in 2018.

As we look back at the 9th round of the 2013 draft, there are players who can contribute a lot to the teams. As we can see, Chad Kuhl made 100+ starts in the majors and Mitch Garver blasted 100+ home runs. Nonetheless, Mitch Garver is the only player who played in the majors in 2025. At this moment, Garver is now a free agent. In the 2026 season, perhaps there will be no players, who were selected in the 9th round of the 2013 draft, to play in the majors? Well, let’s keep watching.
