Boston and Brewers, deal?

Last month, the Boston Red Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a huge deal. In the trade, the Brewers sent Caleb Durbin, Andruw Monasterio, Anthony Seigler and future considerations to Boston. In the meantime, the Red Sox traded Kyle Harrison, Shane Drohan and David Hamilton to the Brewers.

While reading news about this trade, I’m just wondering if these 2 trades have made a lot of trades over the last several seasons. To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Baseball Reference website.

Trade (December 2021)

Brewers

Red Sox

Acquired

- Hunter Renfroe

- Alex Binelas

- Jackie Bradley Jr.

- David Hamilton

Well, let’s quickly review the trades in this decade. Firstly, in December 2021, the Brewers sent Alex Binelas, Jackie Bradley Jr., and David Hamilton to the Reds Sox. Meanwhile, the Brewers acquired Hunter Renfroe from the Red Sox.

In 2022, Renfroe played 125 games for the Brewers, hitting .255/.315/.492 with 29 home runs and 72 RBI. He finished the season with an OPS over .800. Looking at the players that were acquired by the Red Sox, Binelas hasn’t made it into the big leagues and he’s now in the Phillies farm system. At the same time, Jackie Bradley Jr. returned to the Red Sox. He played 92 games for the Red Sox in 2022, hitting .210/.257/.321 with 3 home runs and 29 RBI. The Red Sox released him in August 2022. Additionally, there’s something interesting. David Hamilton was sent to the Red Sox. Hamilton made his MLB debut in 2023. From 2023 to 2025, he played 204 games for the Red Sox, hitting .222/.283/.359 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI. He had 57 steals.

Trade (August 2023)

Brewers

Red Sox

Acquired

- Bradley Blalock

- Luis Urias

In addition, in August 2023, the Brewers sent Luis Urias to the Red Sox. Urias played 32 games for the Red Sox, hitting .225/.361/.337 with 2 home runs and 13 RBI. At the same time, the Brewers acquired Bradley Blalock from the Red Sox. Blalock made his MLB debut in 2024, tossing 1 inning for the Brewers.

Trade (April 2025)

Brewers

Red Sox

Acquired

- Quinn Priester

- Yophery Rodriguez

- John Holobetz

- Draft Pick

Finally, last April, the Brewers acquired Quinn Priester from the Red Sox. Priester made 24 starts and 5 relief appearances for the Brewers in 2025, posting a 3.32 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP over 157.1 innings. Priester earned 13 wins last season. In the meantime, the Red Sox acquired 2 players and a draft pick. Those 2 players are still in the minors.

From 2021 to 2025, the Brewers did send some players to Boston. Some players actually played well after being traded. Hunter Renfroe was hitting well for the Brewers in 2022. Furthermore, Quinn Priester did pitch well for the Brewers last season. It seems that the Brewers did benefit from the trades with the Red Sox. Reviewing the trade between the Red Sox and the Brewers last month, will the Brewers benefit from this trade? Interestingly, the Brewers sent David Hamilton to the Red Sox in 2021. 5 years later, Hamilton returned to the Brewers. It would be interesting to see this reunion. He left the Brewers as a prospect and now he has played 200+ games in the majors. In the 2026 season, let’s see if he could contribute a lot to the Brewers. Additionally, there is something else worth watching. Kyle Harrison used to toss 100+ innings for the Giants in 2024. Will he bounce back in 2026? Caleb Durbin finished 3rd in the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year voting. Can he perform well in the AL?
