In mid-February, the Dodgers and Max Muncy agreed to a 1-year contract extension. Muncy’s extension is guaranteed to run through the next season and it will be his 10th season as a major leaguer with the Dodgers.
While reading the news about Muncy’s contract extension with the Dodgers, I’m just thinking about his time with the Dodgers and the impacts he has made. What has he achieved in franchise history? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
Firstly, let’s look at home run leaders. Hall of Famer Duke Snider played for the Dodgers from 1947 to 1962 and he blasted 389 home runs as a Dodger. Additionally, Gil Hodges, who’s a Hall of Famer as well, played 16 seasons for the Dodgers and he smashed 361 home runs. Eric Karros played for the Dodgers from 1991 to 2002 and he crushed 270 home runs. Roy Campanella played 10 seasons for the Dodgers, blasting 242 home runs. Ron Cey played for the Dodgers from 1971 to 1982 and he had 228 home runs as a Dodger. Steve Garvey played 14 seasons with the Dodgers and he hit 211 home runs. Max Muncy has spent 8 seasons with the Dodgers and he already smashed 209 home runs.
In addition, let’s look at the Dodgers who drew a lot of walks. Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese played 16 seasons with the Dodgers and he had more than 1200 walks. Jim Gilliam played 14 seasons with the Dodgers and he’s the other player in franchise history to draw more than 1000 walks. Gil Hodges drew 925 walks as a Dodger and Duke Snider had 893 free passes. Ron Cey and the legend Jackie Robinson each drew 700+ walks in the Dodgers uniform. Zack Wheat and Davey Lopes each had 600+ free passes as a Dodger. From 2018 to 2025, Max Muncy has 575 walks, which now rank 10th most in franchise history.
Finally, Max Muncy has won 3 World Series titles with the Dodgers and we can’t ignore his contribution in the postseason. In the playoffs, Max Munch already smashed 16 home runs, leading the Dodgers in the postseason. Moreover, he has collected 37 RBI in the postseason and 37 RBI are now the 3rd most in franchise history. Furthermore, he owns an OBP over .380 and an OPS over .800 in the playoffs. He surely knows how to play October baseball.
Seeing that the Dodgers and Max Muncy agreed to an extension, it seems that the team truly recognizes what Max Muncy has done to the team. Over the last 8 seasons, it’s clear that Muncy crushed home runs and drew walks to help the team. Max Muncy has shown that a player that was DFAed can become an All-Star. However, Max Muncy is already 35 years old and missed some playing time due to injuries last year. But, he’s still a disciplined hitter. We can keep watching his performance. And with the contract extension, he shall have enough time to reach 700 walks and 250 home runs as a Dodger. Of course, he has to be healthy.
