About 2 weeks ago, I went to a sports card shop in Tokyo. In the shop, they were selling mystery boxes. In the boxes, you might find a hit and there are several hobby packs. I bought 2 mystery boxes, trying to see if I could find something interesting.
When I opened the second box, I found a silver pack, which is from the 2024 Topps Baseball. I was just so curious about what's inside. After opening it, I found a Jacob Amaya rookie chrome card. This card looks interesting to me because Amaya was drafted by the Dodgers. Amaya was traded to the Marlins and he made his MLB debut as a Marlin.
While seeing an Amaya rookie card, I’m just thinking about the trades between the Marlins and the Dodgers. Over the last several seasons, did these 2 teams often make trades? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
Let’s not go too far. So far this decade, the Dodgers and the Marlins have agreed to 3 trades. The first trade was in February 2021. In this trade, the Dodgers sent Dylan Floro, who was an important relief pitcher in the Dodgers to help the team win the 2020 World Series title, to Miami. At the same time, the Dodgers got Kyle Hurt and Alex Vesia.
Floro pitched for the Marlins from 2021 to 2023, posting a 3.32 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 157.1 innings. Looking at the Dodgers side, Alex Vesia has pitched for the Dodgers for 6 seasons. As a Dodger, he now has a 2.65 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP over 272 innings. So far in his career, Kyle Hurt has a 1.04 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in 8.2 innings. He didn’t pitch in 2025 because of recovering from Tommy John surgery.
In addition, in January 2023, the Dodgers sent Jacob Amaya to the Marlins. Amaya made his MLB debut in 2023 and played 4 games for the Marlins, hitting .222/.222/.222 with 2 RBI. In the meantime, the Dodgers acquired Miguel Rojas from the Marlins. Rojas actually returned to the Dodgers. Over the last 3 seasons, Rojas hit .259/.313/.372 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI in 342 games. Nonetheless, the most important is that he crushed a game-tying home run in the 2025 World Series game 7. And so far this season, Rojas has collected 3 hits in 2 games.
Finally, last December, the Dodgers sent Esteury Ruiz to the Marlins and got Adriano Marrero.
As we can see, the Dodgers and the Marlins didn’t make many trades in this decade. But they just agreed to a trade last winter and we can keep watching the impact of this trade. Nonetheless, looking back at the previous 2 trades, the Dodgers acquired Alex Vesia, who has become an important reliever for the Dodgers. Moreover, Miguel Rojas smashed a home run in the Fall Classic and that home run might be one of the most important home runs in World Series history. Also, the Dodgers fans should keep an eye on Kyle Hurt to see his performance after recovering from surgery. For the Marlins, Dylan Floro was a reliable relief pitcher for a couple of years. Overall, it seems that the Dodgers benefit more from those trades.
