My friends and I were watching World Baseball Classic games on TV a few weeks ago. My friend suddenly mentioned Miguel Cabrera because he saw him in the dugout. Miguel Cabrera was the hitting coach for team Venezuela. He’s certainly a future Hall of Famer. While seeing him in the Venezuela uniform, I’m just thinking about the great baseball players from Venezuela.
Among players who were born in Venezuela, any players’ stats are close to Miguel Cabrera? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
Among players who were born in Venezuela, Omar Vizquel leads in games played. He played 24 seasons in the majors and played 2968 games. He’s widely considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the MLB. Vizquel won the Gold Glove award 11 times. Miguel Cabrera spent 21 seasons in the majors and he played 2797 games. Also, Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio played in the majors for 18 years and he played 2599 games. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1984.
Now, let’s look at leaders in hits. There’s no doubt that Miguel Cabrera is the hits leader. He collected 3174 hits in his great career. In particular, he collected 205 hits in 2012. Moreover, Omar Vizquel had 2877 hits in his career. But he never reached 200 hits in a single season as Cabrera did. Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio had 2677 hits in his career.
In addition, let’s look at home run leaders. Miguel Cabrera blasted 511 home runs in his career. There are 10 times that he smashed at least 30 home runs in a single season. Particularly, in 2012 and 2013, he smashed 44 home runs each season. Furthermore, Andres Galarraga crushed 399 home runs in 19 seasons. Also, Eugenio Suarez and Salvador Perez each have blasted 300+ home runs so far in their careers.
Finally, let’s look at RBI leaders. Again, it’s Miguel Cabrera. He collected 1881 RBI in his career. There were 12 times that he collected 100+ RBI in a single season. In particular, he had 130+ RBI in 2012 and 2013. Andres Galarraga collected 1425 RBI in his career. There were 5 times that he collected at least 100 RBI in a single season. Incredibly, he collected 140 RBI in 1997 and had 150 RBI in 1996. Back then, he played for the Rockies. Moreover, Bobby Abreu collected 1363 RBI in 18 seasons and Magglio Ordonez had 1236 RBI in his career.
Looking at the players who were born in Venezuela, without a doubt, Miguel Cabrera is leading in several hitting categories. He’s a member of the 3000-hit club and he smashed 500+ home runs. It’s hard to see another player reach this milestone. Additionally, Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio did play an important role in Venezuela’s baseball history. Moreover, Omar Vizquel, Andres Galarraga and Magglio Ordonez were star players when they were in the majors and they had a pretty good career. Meanwhile, Eugenio Suarez and Salavdor Perez are now playing in the majors and it will be interesting to see how many home runs they will hit in the 2026 season.
