A few days ago, I watched some games on TV. There was a game that the Diamondbacks were playing. I saw that Geraldo Perdomo was hitting. While seeing him playing, I was just thinking about the other player who used to play for the D-backs.
That player is Didi Gregorius. I was just wondering whether their performances were similar in the D-backs uniform. To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
Didi Gregorius made his MLB debut in 2012. Back then, he was in the Reds uniform. In December 2012, he was traded to the D-backs. He played for the D-backs in 2013 and 2014. In those 2 seasons, he slashed .241/.314/.368 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI over 183 games. In December 2014, Gregorius was traded to the Yankees.
Meanwhile, Geraldo Perdomo made it into the big leagues in 2021. So far, he has played 587 games for the Diamondbacks, hitting .253/.348/.375 with 35 home runs and 231 RBI. In particular, he had a great 2025 season, slashing .290/.389/.462 with 20 home runs and 100 RBI. Perdomo finished 4th in the 2025 NL MVP voting.
As we can see, Perdomo’s performance is actually better than Gregorius’ performance in the D-backs uniform. Additionally, Perdomo has played much more games for the D-backs than Didi did.
In addition, in the short-term, he shall stay with the D-backs. While looking at the stats, I’m also wondering if Perdomo might be the best shortstop in franchise history. And, this time, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
Taking a quick look at the number of hits, Stephen Drew played 7 seasons for the D-backs and he had 776 hits. Nick Ahmed spent 10 seasons with the D-backs and he collected 678 hits. Tony Womack played 5 seasons with the D-backs and he was a member of the 2001 D-backs, the team that won the World Series. In those 5 seasons, Womack had 677 hits. Craig Counsell spent 6 seasons with the D-backs and he had 611 hits. Perdomo now has 478 hits.
Moreover, let’s look at the number of home runs. Stephen Drew crushed 72 home runs as a D-back and Nick Ahmed had 70 home runs in the D-backs uniform. Perdomo now has 35 home runs in his career.
Finally, let’s look at the RBI. Stephen Drew collected 333 RBI while playing for the D-backs. Nick Ahmed had 322 RBI as a D-back. Perdomo now has 231 RBI in his career.
Looking at the shortstops in the D-backs franchise history, only 5 players collected more hits than Perdomo has. At the same time, Stephen Drew and Nick Ahmed each blasted 70+ home runs and collected 300+ RBI. As Perdomo agreed to a contract extension with the D-back and he shall stay with the D-backs thru 2029, it will be very interesting to see when Perdomo will surpass Drew and Ahmed in home runs and in RBI. Well, Perdomo had a great 2025 season. The D-backs fans certainly want to see him replicate his performance. Nonetheless, so far this season, he hits .250/.350/.393 with 1 home run and 6 RBI. His OPS is now below .800. It will be worthwhile to see if he finishes the season strong.
