A few weeks ago, I read an article about some players who were drafted in 2020. It indicated that some players who were selected in the first round of the 2020 draft haven’t been called up.
After reading the article, I was just thinking about the players who were selected in the 2020 draft. Back then, which team actually made a good decision? To solve my doubt, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
To make things easier, let’s look at players who now have a WAR of 5 or higher so far. The Chicago White Sox selected Garrett Crochet in the first round of the 2020 draft and he made his MLB debut in the same year. In December 2024, Crochet was traded to the Red Sox. He now has thrown 400+ innings in the majors, posting a 3.17 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He has 500+ strikeouts and his WAR is over 11 thus far.
Moreover, the Mets selected Pete Crow-Armstrong in the first round. In July 2021, he was traded to the Cubs. Pete Crow-Armstrong made his MLB debut in 2023. So far in his career, he hits .239/.289/.429 with 46 home runs and 163 RBI over 300+ games. He now has a 10.4 WAR.
In addition, in the second round, the Cardinals selected Masyn Winn. He was called up in 2023. So far in his career, he has played 300+ games for the Cardinals, hitting .252/.306/.373 with 27 home runs and 137 RBI. Winn now has an 8.0 WAR. Also, Spencer Strider’s WAR is over 8. Strider was drafted by the Braves in the 4th round of the 2020 draft. He made his MLB debut in 2021. Strider has thrown 400+ innings for the Braves, posting a 3.70 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. And he has 600+ strikeouts.
Finally, Evan Carter was selected by the Rangers in the second round. He made his MLB debut in 2023. So far in his career, he has played 100+ games for the Rangers, hitting .220/.320/.396 with 20 home runs and 65 RBI. His WAR is over 5. Additionally, Jordan Westburg and Reid Detmers were both selected in the first round. The Orioles chose Jordan Westburg (CB round A) and the Angels selected Reid Detmers. Westburg made his MLB debut in 2023. He now slashes .264/.312/.456 with 38 home runs and 127 RBI in 260 games. Westburg is on the IL now and hasn’t played any games in 2026. Furthermore, Reid Detmers was called up in 2021. He now has pitched 400+ innings for the Angels, posting a 4.73 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He has thrown 500+ strikeouts so far in his career.
Looking back at the 2020 draft, at this moment, Garrett Crochet has the highest WAR among pitchers and Pete Crow-Armstrong has the highest WAR among position players. However, they are not playing for the teams that chose them. In particular, Pete Crow-Armstrong was traded before being called up. Masyn Winn and Spencer Strider each now have a WAR over 8. However, they were not selected in the first round, particularly, Strider was selected in the 4th round. Several players who were selected in the 2020 draft already play in the majors. We can keep watching which player will contribute the most in the majors from this draft class.
