I chatted with some friends while watching a game. A friend mentioned some Phillies players who used to win an MVP award. Of course, there are several players from the Phillies. However, I don’t know why. We talked about Ryan Howard.
Howard was considered one of the most dangerous hitters in the majors and he won the 2006 NL MVP award. While talking about this player, I was just thinking how great he was. To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
Firstly, Ryan Howard played in the majors from 2004 to 2016. In those 13 seasons, he smashed 382 home runs. He did crush a lot of home runs in his career. From 2004 to 2016, only a few players crushed more home runs than Howard did. Albert Pujols smashed 700+ home runs in his career. From 2004 to 2016, he had 477 home runs. At the same time, Hall of famer David Ortiz crushed 500+ home runs in his career and he had 452 home runs from 2004 to 2016. Miguel Cabrera blasted 434 home runs during the same period. Adam Dunn played in the majors from 2001 to 2014. From 2004 to 2014, he crushed 390 home runs. Moreover, Mark Teixeira played in the majors from 2003 to 2016. From 2004 to 2016, he had 383 home runs.
Secondly, let’s look at the RBI. Ryan Howard collected 1194 RBI in his career. During the same period, again, there weren’t many players who collected more RBI than he did. Miguel Cabrera collected 1491 RBI from 2004 to 2016 and Albert Pujols had 1436 RBI. Hall of Famer David Ortiz had 1400+ RBI during the same period as well. Moreover, Mark Teixeira had 1214 RBI from 2004 to 2016.
In addition, Ryan Howard spent 13 seasons with the Phillies and blasted 382 home runs. In franchise history, Mike Schmidt is the only player who smashed more home runs than Howard did. Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt played 18 seasons for the Phillies and he smashed 548 home runs.
Finally, let’s look at the RBI leaderboard in the Phillies history. Mike Schmidt is the only player who collected 1500+ RBI for the team. Furthermore, Hall of Famer Ed Delahanty played for the Phillies for 13 seasons, slashing .348/.415/.508 with 87 home runs and 1288 RBI. Ryan Howard collected 1194 RBI, which is now 3rd most in franchise history.
When we look back at Ryan Howard’s career, well, in those 13 seasons, his performance was actually very close to some Hall of Famers or future Hall of Famers. Howard smashed 300+ home runs and collected 1000+ RBI in his career. However, it seems that it’s not enough to become a Hall of Famer. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that he has a pretty good career. In those 13 seasons, he won the NL MVP award in 2006 and in 2008, he helped the Phillies win the World Series title. And that’s the most recent World Series title in the Phillies history. Thus, he certainly played an important part in the Phillies franchise history.
