The strikeout leaders?

A few days ago, Jacob Misiorowski became the first pitcher to reach 80 strikeouts in the majors. While reading the post about his performance so far this season, I’m just wondering if there are any Brewers pitchers who used to lead the majors with most strikeouts in a single season.

Well, I checked several websites. It turned out that no pitcher in the Brewers has finished a season with the most strikeouts in the majors. So, I decided to check another thing. In the Brewers franchise history, who is on the leaderboard in most strikeouts in a single season? To solve my doubts, I checked on the great baseball reference website.

Back in 2004, Ben Sheets struck out 264 batters in the majors. Back then, he made 34 starts, posting a 2.70 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP over 237 innings. Interestingly, Ben Sheets only finished a season with 200+ strikeouts one time. Additionally, 264 strikeouts ranked 3rd in the majors in 2004. Randy Johnson led the majors with 290 strikeouts in 2004.

In addition, Corbin Burnes finished the 2022 season with 243 strikeouts. Back in 2022, Burnes made 33 starts, posting a 2.94 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP over 202 innings. 243 strikeouts ranked 2nd most in the majors in 2022. Gerrit Cole led the majors with 257 strikeouts in 2022. Furthermore, Corbin Burnes won the 2021 NL Cy Young award. He made 28 starts in that season. Burnes owned a 2.43 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP over 167 innings. He struck out 234 batters. 234 strikeouts ranked 5th in the majors. In 2021, Robbie Ray was the leader in strikeouts. He struck out 248 batters.

Furthermore, Teddy Higuera pitched for the Brewers for 9 seasons. In 1987, he struck out 240 batters. Back then, he made 35 starts, posting a 3.85 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 261.2 innings. In the 1987 season, Nolan Ryan led the majors with 270 strikeouts and Higuera’s 240 strikeouts were the 4th most. In his career, Higuera used to finish 2 seasons with 200+ strikeouts.

Finally, Brandon Woodruff threw 211 strikeouts in 2021. He made 30 starts, posting a 2.56 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 179.1 innings. Woodruff made his MLB debut in 2017 and it’s his 9th season in the majors. He didn’t pitch in 2024 because of recovering from a surgery.

Looking at the Brewers franchise history, there are only 4 times that a pitcher finished a season with more than 230 strikeouts. In particular, Corbin Burnes is the only pitcher who threw more than 230 strikeouts in a single season twice. Nonetheless, Burnes is not pitching for the Brewers anymore. Woodruff used to throw 200+ strikeouts in a single season, but he didn’t reach 230 strikeouts in a single season. Well, Jacob Misiorowski already reached 80 strikeouts in 2026. It’s his second season in the majors. Misiorowski made 14 starts and 1 relief appearance last year. He threw 66 innings in 2025. It will be very interesting to see 2 things. Firstly, how many innings will Misiorowski throw in 2026? Additionally, how many strikeouts will he finish this season?
