It’s been more than a month since the 2026 season started. Several teams are off to a good start and have played well so far. Well, it might be too early. However, there are some discussions about the World Series title. While reading news and articles about discussions, I found that there were discussions about home field advantage.
After reading the discussions, I was thinking about the World Series over the last 10 seasons. Does the home field advantage truly exist?
Back in 2016, the Cubs and the Indians (Guardians) played in the Fall Classic. The Indians (Guardians) had home field advantage. Nonetheless, the Cubs won the 2016 World Series title. In particular, the Cubs won the game 7 at the Progressive Field, which is the home of the Guardians. The next year, the Dodgers faced the Astros in the World Series. The Dodgers had home field advantage. Nonetheless, the Astros defeated the Dodgers at Dodger stadium in game 7 of the World Series. Well, we all know what happened in the 2017 World Series. But the result didn’t change. The Dodgers didn’t win game 7 at home.
In 2018, the Red Sox had home field advantage, and they did win the title. Nevertheless, the final game of the 2018 World Series was played at Dodger stadium, and it was game 5. The next season, the Astros had home field advantage in the 2019 World Series. However, they lost to the Nationals in game 7 at Minute Maid Park.
Well, the 2020 season was a different one. The home field advantage wasn’t the usual one as we know because the 2020 World Series was played at a neutral site. But the Dodgers were designated as having home field advantage and they won the World Series title in 6 games.
In addition, the Braves won the 2021 World Series in 6 games. However, they didn’t have home field advantage. Their opponent, the Astros, had home field advantage. But the Astros lost game 6 at Minute Maid Park. The next season, the Phillies played against the Astros in the Fall Classic. The Astros again had home field advantage. This time, they defeated the Phillies in 6 games and they lifted the trophy at home.
In 2023, the Rangers and the Diamondbacks played in the World Series. The Rangers earned home field advantage. They beat the D-backs in 5 games and the final game of the 2023 season was played at Chase Field, home of the D-backs.
Finally, the Dodgers won back-to-back World Series titles. In 2024, they had home field advantage and beat the Yankees in 5 games. The final game of the 2024 World Series was played at Yankee stadium. Last season, the home field advantage belonged to the Blue Jays. Nonetheless, the Dodgers won the game 7 at Rogers Centre.
Looking back at the last 10 World Series, the teams owned home field advantage won 5 times, including the 2020 Fall Classic. Nonetheless, there was only one time that a home team won the final game at its ballpark. The Astros won game 6 in the 2022 World Series and lifted the trophy at Minute Maid Park. Additionally, there were 4 times that the World Series ended in 7 games. Among those 4 games, no home team won. So, does home field advantage truly exist in the World Series? Well, in the last 10 seasons, this could be interesting to think about.
