A couple of days ago, we reviewed some teams’ performance while swinging on a 3-0 count. In particular, some teams swung more on a 3-0 count. This time, let’s look at the players to which one frequently swung on a 3-0 count over the last several seasons.
Again, we took a look at data from statcast website.
From 2021 to 2025, Matt Olson swung on a 3-0 count 46 times. He collected 6 hits while swinging on a 3-0 count and 4 of those hits were home runs. His batting average of swinging on a 3-0 count was .462.
Meanwhile, Aaron Judge swung on a 3-0 count 45 times over the last 5 seasons. While swinging on a 3-0 count, he got 6 hits and 2 were home runs. Judge’s batting average was .286. Moreover, Kyle Tucker swung 43 times on a 3-0 count and he got only 4 hits. While swinging on a 3-0 count, Tucker had a batting average of .250.
In addition, Jose Ramirez is the other player who swung 40+ times on a 3-0 count. Interestingly, he collected 12 hits on making this decision. 4 of those hits were home runs. Jose Ramirez had a batting average of .500 while swinging on a 3-0 count.
At the same time, Corey Seager and Freddie Freeman each swung 39 times on a 3-0 count. Seager had 5 hits and Freeman collected 7 hits. They each had a batting average over .300 on making this swing decision. But Seager didn’t crush a homer on a 3-0 count over the last 5 seasons.
In the meantime, there are other MVP award winners. Shohei Ohtani swung 38 times on a 3-0 count and Ronald Acuna Jr. swung 37 times. Ohtani got 5 hits and Acuna Jr. had 4 hits. Nonetheless, there’s a difference in batting average. Ohatni’s batting average of swinging on a 3-0 count was over .700.
Finally, Marcus Semien, Pete Alonso, Jose Bell and Anthony Santander each swung more than 35 times on a 3-0 count from 2021 to 2025. Semien got 7 hits, Bell had 8 hits and Santander collected 9 hits. In particular, Santander smashed 4 home runs while swinging on a 3-0 count.
As we can see, from 2021 to 2025, there were 10+ players who chose to swing on a 3-0 count more than 35 times. Well, all of them are star players and there’s no doubt that they were given green light to swing at the pitch if it’s what they are looking for. Additionally, 4 players each swung on a 3-0 count 40 times or more. Among them, it seems that Jose Ramirez did make a good swing decision with 12 hits. Hence, when we see Jose Ramirez swing on a 3-0 count, we shouldn’t be surprised because he can do some damage. Furthermore, Shohei Ohtani and Anthony Santander both had good outcomes while swinging on a 3-0 count. Well, Santander hasn’t played any games so far in the 2026 season because he underwent shoulder surgery. But, we can keep watching other players’ performances this year. Are they still relatively aggressive on a 3-0 count? Or perhaps, some of them become more patient?
