3-0 swing?

Around 3 weeks ago, I watched a game on TV. In that game, I saw 2 players swung at a pitch on a 3-0 count. Of course, it’s not a bad idea to swing at a pitch on a 3-0 count. However, I saw it twice in one game and those 2 players play for the same team. That makes me wonder one thing.

Over the last several seasons, did players from certain teams frequently swing on a 3-0 count? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the statcast website.

From 2021 to 2025, the Atlanta Braves swung on a 3-0 count more than 200 times. There’s only one team that swung on a 3-0 count more than 200 times over the last 5 seasons. The outcomes of swinging on a 3-0 count were not bad. The Braves owned a batting average over .400 and had 30+ hits while swinging at a pitch on a 3-0 count.

In the meantime, the Rangers swung on a 3-0 count 180+ times. They collected 20+ hits while swinging at a pitch on a 3-0 count. Their batting average was .308 on swinging on a 3-0 count. A batting average over .300 looks good. But, let’s wait and take a look at another teams’ performance.

The Dodgers won 2 World Series titles in the last 5 seasons. They did swing on a 3-0 count more often than most of the MLB teams. From 2021 to 2025, the Dodgers hitters swung on a 3-0 count 150+ times and they collected 20+ hits. They had a batting average of .397 while swinging on a 3-0 count.

At the same time, let’s look at 2 teams from the AL East. The Yankees swung on a 3-0 count 150+ times and the Blue Jays did so. Nonetheless, there’s something different. While swinging on a 3-0 count, the Yankees collected 20+ hits and the Blue Jays had 30+ hits. How about the batting average? Well, the Blue Jays owned a batting average of .438 and the Yankees had a batting average below .380. The Blue Jays performed much better at swinging on a 3-0 count than the Yankees did.

Finally, the Guardians swung on a 3-0 count 140 times from 2021 to 2025 and 3 other teams each swung 130+ times. It’s worthwhile to mention the Giants because they had a batting average of .446 while swinging on a 3-0 count. However, they are not the team which had the highest batting average on a 3-0 count. The Marlins had a batting average of .542 while swinging on a 3-0 count.

Swinging on a 3-0 count is an interesting topic in baseball. Normally, it’s encouraged to take a pitch to draw a walk. Even if it’s a strike, it becomes a 3-1 count and it’s still an advantage for the hitter. Nonetheless, sometimes, hitters are given the “green light” to swing if the pitch is perfectly in their zone. From 2021 to 2025, we can clearly see that the Braves swung more often on a 3-0 count and the outcomes aren’t so bad. Perhaps, their hitters are encouraged to swing or be given a green light on a 3-0 count?
