Good trades?

I listened to a podcast show a few weeks ago. In the show, the host mentioned the Tulowitzki trade. It was a trade between the Rockies and the Blue Jays in 2015. Well, it was a while ago, indeed. However, after listening to the podcast show, I was just wondering if the Blue Jays and the Rockies have agreed on more trades since then.

To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.

Trade (July 2015)

Blue Jays

Rockies

Acquired

- LaTroy Hawkins
- Troy Tulowitzki

- Miguel Castro
- Jeff Hoffman
- Jose Reyes
- Jesus Tinoco

Firstly, let’s quickly look back at the summer of 2015. The Rockies sent LaTroy Hawkins and Troy Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays and acquired 4 players. After being traded to the Blue Jays, LaTroy Hawkins made 18 relief appearances, posting a 2.76 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP over 16.1 innings. Tulowitzki played for the Blue Jays in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In those 3 seasons, he slashed .250/.313/.414 with 36 home runs and 122 RBI over 238 games.

And looking at the Rockies, Jose Reyes played 47 games for the Rockies, hitting .259/.291/.368 with 3 home runs and 19 RBI. He was released by the Rockies in June 2016. Meanwhile, Miguel Castro pitched for the Rockies in 2015 and 2016, posting a 7.20 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP in 20 innings. Moreover, Jeff Hoffman made his MLB debut in 2016. He pitched for the Rockies from 2016 to 2020. In those 5 seasons, he owned a 6.40 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP over 230.2 innings. After the 2020 season, Hoffman was traded to the Reds. Jesus Tinoco made his MLB debut as a Rockie in 2019 and he pitched 36 innings.

Trade (July 2018)

Blue Jays

Rockies

Acquired

- Chad Spanberger
- Forrest Wall

- Player to be named later

- Seunghwan Oh

In addition, in July 2018, the Blue Jays sent Seunghwan Oh to the Rockies. He pitched for the Rockies in 2018 and 2019, posting a 5.67 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP over 39.2 innings.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays acquired 3 players from the Rockies. Chad Spanberger didn’t make it into the big leagues. Forrest Wall didn’t make his MLB debut in the Blue Jays uniform. Bryan Baker was traded to the Blue Jays in August 2018 to complete the trade and he made his MLB debut as a Blue Jay in 2021.

Trade (March 2022)

Blue Jays

Rockies

Acquired

- Adrian Pinto

- Raimel Tapia

- Randal Grichuk

- Cash

Finally, in March 2022, the Rockies got Randal Grichuck and cash from the Blue Jays. Grichuk played for the Rockies in 2022 and 2023, hitting .275/.321/.448 with 27 home runs and 100 RBI over 204 games. Then, he was traded to the Angels in July 2023.

In the meantime, the Blue Jays got Raimel Tapia and Adrian Pinto. Tapia played 128 games for the Blue Jays in 2022, hitting .265/.292/.380 with 7 home runs and 52 RBI. Adrian Pinto is now in the minors.

All in all, over the last 10 seasons, the Blue Jays and the Rockies didn’t agree to many trades. The trade in 2015 is probably the biggest one between these 2 teams. And when we look back at those 3 trades from 2015 to 2022, perhaps, we could take a closer look at the one in March 2022. Adrian Pinto is still in the minors and let’s see if he will make it into the big leagues. That might be an important factor to check before saying which team benefits the most from the trade.
