Love my sliders?

A couple of days ago, we reviewed that several pitchers utilized their curveballs to generate a lot of strikeouts over the last few seasons. Now, let’s look at another type of breaking pitches.

Slider is commonly used in the majors. Today, let’s take a look at which pitchers did throw a lot of strikeouts via their sliders.

Sliders: Slider, Sweeper, Slurve

Dylan Cease has already thrown 1300+ strikeouts so far in his career. From 2021 to 2025, he threw 200+ strikeouts each season. Without a doubt, he punched out a lot of hitters in the major. From 2021 to 2025, he combined his slider and sweeper to generate 600+ strikeouts. In particular, from 2022 to 2025, his slider created 100+ strikeouts each season.

Carlos Rodon has pitched in the majors for 12 seasons with 1400+ strikeouts. From 2021 to 2025, there were 2 times that he finished a season with 200+ strikeouts. Over the last 5 seasons, he used his slider to create 400+ strikeouts. In particular, he threw 100+ strikeouts via his slider in 2024.

In addition, Brady Singer made his MLB debut in 2020. Now, he has 800+ strikeouts in his career. So far in his career, Singer never finished a season with at least 200 strikeouts. Nonetheless, he does use his slider and his sweeper to generate strikeouts. Over the last 5 seasons, he combined his slider and sweeper to generate 400+ strikeouts. More superficially, he used his slider to create 367 strikeouts from 2021 to 2025.

Moreover, Sonny Gray has spent 14 seasons in the majors. He’s very close to the 2000 strikeouts milestone. In 2024 and 2025, he pitched for the Cardinals and finished each season with 200+ strikeouts. His sweeper is a key weapon to generate strikeouts. From 2021 to 2025, he used his sweeper to strike out 300+ hitters. Meanwhile, he used his slider to throw strikeouts as well. Particularly, from 2023 to 2025, he used his sweeper to create 100+ strikeouts each season.

Finally, from 2021 to 2025, there were 2 times that Jesus Luzardo finished a season with 200+ strikeouts. Over the last 5 seasons, he utilized his slider and sweeper to create more than 370 strikeouts. In particular, his sliders created 100+ strikeouts in 2023. In the meantime, let’s take a look at Jose Berrios, whose slurve is an interesting pitch to watch in the majors. From 2021 to 2025, Berrios used his slurve to create 300+ strikeouts in the majors. Furthermore, Chris Sale won the NL Cy Young award in 2024. Back then, he threw 225 strikeouts. Among those 225 strikeouts, 124 came from his slider. He also used his slider to strike out 100+ batters last season.

Looking back at the last 5 seasons, we can clearly see that Dylan Cease’s slider is an important weapon to fool the MLB hitters as he frequently used his slider to create at least 100 strikeouts in a single season. Additionally, Carlos Rodon’s slider was hard to hit as well. And you can’t ignore Chris Sale, who’s a Cy Young award winner. His slider is devastating. In the meantime, Jose Berrios’ slurve is interesting to watch.
