The 2026 MLB All-Star game was held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Dylan Cease, who’s from the Blue Jays, made the start for the AL All-Stars. At the same time, Cristopher Sanchez, who’s the ace of the Phillies, took the mound for the NL All-Stars. Interestingly, there’s a pitcher who used to make a start for both teams in the mid-summer classic.
Roy Halladay, who was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2019, made a start in the 2009 All-Star game. Back then, he pitched for the Blue Jays. And in 2011, Halladay made a start in the mid-summer classic and this time, he was in the Phillies uniform. Halladay’s career was incredible, indeed. While reading reports about the All-Star starts, I’m just wondering about his career. During his time in the majors, how great was he?
To solve my doubt, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
Firstly, let’s look at wins. Well, it might not be the best way to evaluate a pitcher now. But, let’s still take a look at it. CC Sabathia was elected to the Hall of Fame last year. He pitched in the majors from 2001 to 2019. From 2001 to 2013, he earned 205 wins. Additionally, Andy Pettitte spent 18 seasons in the majors with 256 wins. From 1998 to 2013, he got 205 wins. Also, Tim Hudson pitched in the majors from 1999 to 2015 and he got 222 wins. From 1999 to 2013, he had 205 wins. And Roy Halladay had 203 wins in his career.
Secondly, let’s look at quality starts. From 1999 to 2013, Tim Hudson had 274 quality starts. Mark Buehrle pitched in the majors from 2000 to 2015. He made 400+ starts in his career. From 2000 to 2013, he had 266 quality starts. Sabathia had 261 quality starts from 2001 to 2013. Roy Halladay had 257 quality starts in his career. Livan Hernandez pitched in the majors from 1996 to 2012. From 1998 to 2012, he had 251 quality starts.
In addition, let’s look at the number of strikeouts. Well, Randy Johnson spent 22 seasons in the majors and he had 4875 strikeouts. From 1998 to 2009, he struck out 2875 batters. Javier Vazquez pitched in the majors from 1998 to 2011. In his career, he threw 2536 strikeouts. Sabathia had 2389 strikeouts from 2001 to 2013. Pedro Martinez pitched in the majors from 1992 to 2009. From 1998 to 2009, Pedro Martinez struck out 2184 batters. Furthermore, A.J. Burnett pitched in the majors from 1999 to 2015. From 1999 to 2013, he threw 2180 strikeouts. And Roy Halladay had 2117 strikeouts in his career.
Finally, let’s look at WAR. Randy Johnson’s fWAR was 70 from 1998 to 2009. Meanwhile, Roy Halladay’s fWAR was 65.4. Pedro Martinez owned a 62.3 fWAR from 1998 to 2009.
There’s little doubt that Roy Halladay was dominant when he was on the mound. In his career, he threw 2749.1 innings with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. He didn’t join the 3000-strikeout club. However, he had 200+ wins and he consistently made quality starts. Meanwhile, in his generation, we’ve seen several great pitchers who are now in the Hall of Fame as well.
