Good trades?

In late July, the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Nationals agreed to a trade. In the deal, the Red Sox sent pitcher Connelly Early to the Nationals. At the same time, the Nationals sent Curtis Mead to the Red Sox. While reading news about the trade, well, so many analysts shared their opinions.

However, I was just wondering whether these 2 teams agreed to make a deal often. To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.

To make things easier, I only took a look at the trades over the last 5 seasons.

Trade (July 2021)

Red Sox

Nationals

Acquired

- Kyle Schwarber

- Aldo Ramirez

Back in July 2021, the Nationals decided to send Kyle Schwarber to the Red Sox for Aldo Ramirez. Before the trade, Schwarber played 72 games for the Nationals, hitting .253/.340/.570 with 25 home runs and 53 RBI. He owned an OPS of .910 in the Nationals uniform. After the trade, Schwarber played 41 games for the Red Sox, hitting .291/.435/.522 with 7 home runs and 18 RBI. Also, he smashed 3 home runs for the Red Sox in the 2021 postseason.

Well, for the Nationals, Aldo Ramirez didn’t make it into the big leagues and he’s not in the Nationals farm system anymore.

Trade (December 2025)

Red Sox

Nationals

Acquired

- Jake Bennett

- Luis Perales

In addition, last December, the Red Sox sent Luis Perales to the Nationals and acquired Jake Bennett. Bennett made his MLB debut on May 1, 2026. So far this season, he has made 14 starts for the Red Sox, posting a 3.46 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP over 80.2 innings. Thus far, Jake Bennett has become a key player in the Red Sox rotation.

At this moment, Luis Perales is now in the Rochester Red Wings, triple A affiliate of the Nationals. But he’s on the Nationals 40-man roster.

Well, looking back at the last 2 trades between the Nationals and the Red Sox, the Red Sox actually acquired 2 players that soon made an impact. Kyle Schwarber was able to hit home runs for the Red Sox and Jake Bennett has joined the Red Sox rotation this season. Nonetheless, the Nationals got 2 prospects. Unfortunately, Aldo Ramirez didn’t make it into the big leagues and we have to keep watching if Luis Perales will soon make it into the big leagues. If we look at those 2 trades, it seems that the Red Sox benefit more from the trades.

Nonetheless, things just happened quickly after the trade this July. Curtis Mead was placed on the IL after playing his very first game with the Red Sox. It will be worthwhile to see if he will return this season. Meanwhile, Connelly Early hasn’t made any starts for the Nationals. He’s on the IL as well. It will be very interesting to see if he will make a huge impact on the Nationals rotation when he comes back. In particular, will he become a key member in the Nationals rotation in the coming seasons? There will be a lot to monitor in the coming seasons and of course, we have to see if Luis Perales will be called up as well.
