Great trade partners?

In late January, the Brewers decided to send ace Freddy Peralta and pitcher Tobias Myers to the Mets for pitcher Brandon Sproat and infielder Jett Williams. This is surely a huge trade because the Brewers sent their ace to New York.

While seeing this trade, I just thought about one thing. David Stearns, who used to lead the baseball operations for the Brewers, is now the head of baseball operations for the Mets. He was named the general manager of the Brewers in September 2015 and was promoted to president of baseball operations in January 2019. In October 2022, he stepped down and became an advisor. Hence, Stearns led the baseball operations for the Brewers for 7 seasons. During his time with the Brewers, did he often make trades with the Mets? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.

Trade (August 2017)

Brewers

Mets

Acquired

- Neil Walker

- Cash

- Player to be named later (Eric Hanhold)

Firstly, the Brewers acquired Neil Walker and cash from the Mets in August 2017. In September, the Brewers sent Eric Hanhold to the Mets to complete the trade. Neil Walker only played 38 games for the Brewers in 2017, hitting .267/.409/.433 with 4 home runs and 13 RBI. He became a free agent after the 2017 season. Eric Hanhold made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2018. He threw 2.1 innings for the Mets.

Trade (January 2019)

Brewers

Mets

Acquired

- Adam Hill

- Bobby Wahl

- Felix Valerio

- Keon Broxton

In January 2019, the Brewers sent Keon Broxton to the Mets. Broxton only played 34 games for the Mets, hitting .143/.208/.163 with 2 RBI. The Mets designated him for assignment in May 2019. Meanwhile, the Brewers got 3 players in the trade. Adam Hill was sent to the Mariners in December 2019. Bobby Wahl pitched 2.1 innings for the Brewers in 2020. Felix Valerio didn’t make it into the big leagues.

Trade (May 2021)

Brewers

Mets

Acquired

- Pedro Quintana

- Billy McKinney

Finally, in May 2021, the Brewers sent Billy McKinney to the Mets. McKinney only played 39 games for the Mets, hitting .220/.304/.473 with 5 home runs and 14 RBI. In the trade, the Brewers acquired Pedro Quintana from the Mets. He didn’t make it into the big leagues and was released in April 2024.

Looking back at the trades between the Mets and the Brewers from 2017 to 2021, Neil Walker did contribute to the Brewers with an OPS over .800 after being traded. However, he only played 38 games for the Brewers. For the Mets, Billy McKinney had an OPS over .770 after being sent to the Mets. Nevertheless, the Mets designated him for assignment in July 2021, and traded him to the Dodgers. During those days of leading the baseball operations for the Brewers, Stearns agreed to 3 trades with the Mets, well, it wasn’t very common. But Stearns did agree to some deals with the Mets. Nonetheless, the results weren’t so good for both teams. But now, Stearns leads the baseball operations for the Mets. Since he was named president of baseball operations for the Mets in October 2023, Stearns has agreed to 3 trades with the Brewers. We can keep watching if David Stearns will work on some trades with his former club again.
