Just a few weeks ago, I listened to a podcast show. In the show, a guest mentioned Hanley Ramirez, who was a star shortstop and used to play for the Dodgers. After listening to the show, I was just thinking about a question.
Over the last several seasons, the Dodgers used several players at shortstop. Among them, which player did play very well? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.
From 2010 to 2025, there are 7 players who played more than 150 games for the Dodgers as a shortstop. Firstly, let’s start with Corey Seager, Seager played for the Dodgers from 2015 to 2021, hitting .297/.367/.504 with 104 home runs and 364 RBI. He spent most of his time as a shortstop. While playing at shortstop, Seager had a .298 BA and his OPS was over .800. Without a doubt, he’s a top offensive shortstop in the majors. He was certainly an important player in the Dodgers lineup during those 7 seasons.
Hanley Ramirez played for the Dodgers from 2012 to 2014 and played 248 games as a shortstop. Interestingly, his batting average was .298 as well. Meanwhile, his OPS was over .800. As a shortstop, he smashed 41 home runs and collected 157 RBI for the Dodgers. Overall, his hitting performance was good when he played for the Dodgers. Moreover, Miguel Rojas made his MLB debut in 2014. He played for the Dodgers in 2014 and was traded to the Marlins in December 2014. In 2023, he returned to the Dodgers. Rojas has played 200+ games at shortstop in the Dodgers uniform. Nonetheless, his OPS was below .700.
In addition, Mookie Betts started playing at shortstop from 2023. So far, he has played 200+ games as a shortstop for the Dodgers. Well, he didn’t hit well in 2025 with a .258 BA and a .732 OPS. Nonetheless, as a shortstop thus far, he has a .275 BA and an OPS of .798, which isn’t bad. Furthermore, Chris Taylor played 200+ games at shortstop as well. His OPS was .770 as a shortstop.
Finally, Trea Turner played for the Dodgers in 2021 and 2022. He’s one of the best offensive shortstops in the majors as well. As a shortstop for the Dodgers, he had a batting average over .300 and his OPS was over .800. Also, Dee Strange-Gordon played for the Dodgers from 2011 to 2014. He played 100+ games as a shortstop and had a .257 BA.
Looking at the last 16 seasons, we can clearly see that there are several shortstops who did hit well in the Dodgers uniform. Without a doubt, no one would ignore Corey Seager’s performance. He was able to crush home runs and it’s not that easy to find a player like him. Hanley Ramirez didn’t let the team down and he hit well as a shortstop from 2012 to 2014. Trea Turner’s performance was impressive and he’s surely a star player. Nonetheless, Turner didn’t stay too long as a Dodger. Now, Mookie Betts has played more than 220 games at shortstop for the Dodgers. This season, he shall surpass Hanley Ramirez in games played as a shortstop. It will be interesting to see whether he will also surpass Hanley Ramirez (as a shortstop) in other hitting categories as well.
