Several weeks ago, I listened to a podcast show. In the show, a host asked several questions to Jed Hoyer, who’s the president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs.
The conversation was very interesting. In particular, they talked about a trade between the Cubs and the Mets. After listening to the show, I was wondering if the Cubs and the Mets have agreed to many deals since Hoyer became the head of baseball operations of the Cubs.
To understand a little bit more, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
The Cubs named Jed Hoyer president of baseball operations in November 2020. In July 2021, he decided to send two players and cash to the Mets for Pete Crow-Armstrong. Pete Crow-Armstrong made his MLB debut in 2023. Nonetheless, he didn’t collect any hits in 2023 and last year, he finished the season with an OPS below .700. However, he has a breakout season this year. Pete Crow-Armstrong now hits .283/.313/.580 with 14 home runs and 46 RBI in 52 games. Moreover, he has 14 stolen bases.
Meanwhile, looking at 2 players that the Mets acquired. Things are quite interesting. Javier Baez only played 47 games for the Mets. He slashed .299/.371/.515 with 9 home runs and 22 RBI. He owned an OPS over .800 in the Mets uniform. He became a free agent after the 2021 season and inked a deal with the Tigers. Additionally, Trevor Williams tossed 32.1 innings for the Mets in 2021, posting a 3.06 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. In 2022, Williams threw 89.2 innings for the Mets and owned a 3.21 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Williams became a free agent after the 2022 season and joined the Nationals.
In addition, in August 2022, the Cubs sent Mychal Givens to the Mets and acquired Saul Gonzalez. In 2022, Givens threw 20.2 innings for the Mets, posting a 4.79 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Givens became a free agent after the 2022 season and joined the Orioles. And Saul Gonzalez isn’t in the Cubs system now.
Finally, the Cubs sent Vinny Nittoli to the Mets for future considerations. Nittoli made 3 relief appearances for the Mets in 2023, posting a 2.45 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over 3.2 innings. Nittoli joined the A’s with a minor league deal in November 2023.
Looking at the trades between the Cubs and the Mets since Jed Hoyer became the head of baseball operations for the Cubs in November 2020, the most important one is probably the trade in the summer of 2021. In the trade, the Cubs acquired Pete Crow-Armstrong, who was still a prospect. His performance wasn’t so impressive over the last 2 seasons. Nevertheless, this season, Pete Crow-Armstrong has played very well in the Cubs uniform. If he continues his great performance, this trade will certainly play an important part in the Cubs franchise history. Of course, we can keep watching what stats Pete Crow-Armstrong will show at the end of this season. Nonetheless, other trades with the Mets didn’t have huge impacts on the Cubs.
