Seize RBI opportunities?

A few days ago, I watched a baseball game on TV. When a batter was at bat, it clearly showed that his performance was great with runners in scoring position. And the next batter was hitting, it also showed that he has done a great job with runners in scoring position.

After watching the game, I was just thinking if this team has performed well when runners are in scoring position. To understand a little bit more, I decided to check on the MLB website.

The Dodgers won the 2024 World Series title and they certainly want to do it again in 2025. So far this season, they have 34 wins and 21 losses and they are leading the NL West. An important thing to watch is that they are hitting well with runners in scoring position. They have a batting average over .300 with 200+ RBI when runners are in scoring position. At the same time, the Chicago Cubs have done a good job with runners in scoring position as well. With RISP, the Cubs own a batting average over .300 with 200+ RBI. And they are leading in the NL Central.

Meanwhile, in the AL, the Twins have hit well with runners in scoring position. They have a batting average over .270 with RISP. The team is now second in the AL Central.

Moreover, the Cardinals are now second in the NL Central. An important thing is that they have done a great job with runners in scoring position. Now, they have a .270 batting average with RISP. Furthermore, 5 other teams each have a batting average of .260 or higher when runners are in scoring position.

In addition, let’s take a closer look. So, with runners in scoring position and 2 outs, which team has done a better job? The answer is quite clear. The Dodgers now have a batting average of .290 when runners are in scoring position with 2 outs. Additionally, in this high pressure situation, their OPS is over .900. They certainly know how to drive in runs.

In the meantime, let’s look at 2 teams in the AL Central. The Twins have a .277 batting average with runners in scoring position and 2 outs. Also, the Tigers are surely a postseason contender. The Tigers are now leading the AL Central. By far this season, they have batted well with runners in scoring position and 2 outs. They have a batting average over .275 and their OPS is over .800.

Finally, the Washington Nationals have a batting average of .271 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs. Nonetheless, the team is not a postseason contender at this moment with a winning percentage below .500. Nevertheless, the Cubs are now leading in the NL Central and have blasted 10+ home runs and collected 90+ RBI with runners in scoring position and 2 outs.

As we can see, in the National League, it’s clear that the Dodgers and the Cubs have done a good job with runners in scoring position. In the AL, the Tigers and the Twins have hit well under this situation. Their batters certainly know how to hit with RISP. Even with 2 outs, they can drive in runs and handle the situation well. For sure, their fans would like to see them keep doing great things. And for the opponents, they might have to figure out how to pitch in a different way with RISP.
