Will Smith vs. Jorge Posada

A few weeks ago, I watched a video on X. It was about the comparison between the 1998 Yankees and the 2025 Dodgers. It was quite interesting to see the comparison of each position.

When I saw the comparison between Jorge Posada and Will Smith, I was quite curious about their careers. To understand a little bit more, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.

Will Smith made his MLB debut in 2019 and he was 24 years old. So far in his career, he has played 600+ games for the Dodgers with 114 home runs and 400 RBI. Additionally, he has 12 steals and owns an OPS over .800. Also, he’s now a 2-time All-Star.

At the same time, let’s look at Posada’s first 7 seasons in the majors. Posada made his MLB debut in 1995. From 1995 to 2001, he played 580 games for the Yankees, hitting .268/.369/.465 with 85 home runs and 326 RBI. His OPS was over .800 in his first 7 seasons in the majors. Furthermore, Posada was selected to the All-Star game in 2000 and 2001.

Looking at the first 7 seasons of those 2 great catchers, Will Smith plays more games than Posada did. Moreover, looking at the number of hits, RBI and home runs, Will Smith certainly collects more than Posada did in his first 7 seasons. Nonetheless, when we take a look at BA, OBP and OPS, Posada’s numbers were higher.

In addition, Will Smith has played in the postseason with the Dodgers since he made his MLB debut in 2019. From 2019 to 2024, Will Smith played 57 games in the postseason. He blasted 8 home runs and collected 29 RBI. In the 2021 postseason and last postseason, he each smashed 3 home runs. Furthermore, he collected 13 RBI in the 2020 playoffs.

In the meantime, let’s look at Posada’s appearances in the postseason from 1995 to 2001. He played 51 games in the postseason, collecting 35 hits, 5 home runs and 21 RBI. However, Posada didn’t play in the 1996 playoffs.

Taking a closer look at their first 6 postseasons, as we can see, Will Smith played more games than Posada did. And Smith did crush more home runs than Posada. At the same time, Smith collected more hits and more RBI than Posada did. Nonetheless, looking at BA, OBP and OPS, Posada’s numbers were higher. In particular, Posada’s on-base percentage was over .360 in 3 of his first 6 postseasons.

Entering the 7th season in the majors, Will Smith already smashed 100+ home runs and collected 400+ RBI. Smith has shown that he’s one of the best catchers in the majors. And his numbers in several categories are more impressive than Posada’s. In particular, no one will doubt Smith’s power. Nevertheless, looking at the comparison between Will Smith and Jorge Posada, without doubts, they are star players. Moreover, a key thing that we have to watch is that Jorge Posada spent 17 seasons in the majors and played 1829 games. It will be worthwhile to see Will Smith’s career and see if he can surpass Posada’s 275 home runs and 1065 RBI.
